Education for Sustainable Development through Community Learning Centres (CLCs)
Education for Sustainable Development through Community Learning CentresSustainable development is not an isolated issue – eradication of poverty, social, cultural and overall development including environment is the pre-condition of sustainable development, said the speakers at national workshop on education for sustainable development through community learning centers, held on 11-12 January 2009 at IDB Bhaban. The workshop was organized by UNESCO in collaboration with Dhaka Ahsania Mission and Okayama University, Japan. Participants from Ministry of Education, Bureau of Non-Formal Education, UNICEF, Dhaka University, International University of Business, Agriculture and Technology (IUBAT), BRAC University and 10 other NGOs actively participated in the workshop.
As part of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014), and a follow-up to South Asian ESD Coordination and Capacity Building Workshop held in Sri Lanka in November 2008, this workshop intended to build on the existing resources and experiences of the country, in view of various initiatives already undertaken by different NGOs and universities including Dhaka Ahsania Mission, as one of the five organizations of Centre of Excellence for ESD, supported by UNESCO and ACCU.
Mr. Saifullah, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Education, and National Focal Point for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) pointed that sustainable development means to meet up the need of present generation without damaging the achievements in the past and opportunities for future. He emphasized that sustainable development is not attained with the government’s efforts only, but needs participation of the community, NGOs and civil society.

Digital Catalogue for Dinajpur Museum available online

Digital Catalogue- Dinajpur MuseumDinajpur Museum is one of the few museums which have been developed by community initiatives in Bangladesh. It possesses various categories of objects including some rare and interesting pieces of sculptures which testify to the Eastern Indian School of Art in Post-6th century ACE. The rich collection makes this museum a very important repository of tangible heritage of this region. Like many other museums, it did not have a systematically developed catalogue of the collected and displayed objects. The absence of a catalogue informed by the recent data structures about the objects makes the collection of this museum vulnerable to loss and theft.

Under these circumstances, with the funding of UNESCO, Dhaka Office as a part of their mandate to safeguard Cultural Heritage, a team of researchers with the coordination of Swadhin Sen, Assistant Professor, Department of Archaeology, Jahangirnagar University have developed the  digital catalogue of the museum objects for the first time in Bangladesh in 2007. The software of digital database, which is the first in its kind in Bangladesh, was designed by Ziaul Bashar and the team.

You can browse the objects in Dinajpur Museum at http://museum.unescodhaka.orghttp://museum.unescodhaka.org.

Assessment Survey found Adult Literacy rate to be 48.8 percent in Bangladesh

Literacy Assessment Survey 2008Recognizing the overarching need of reliable data on literacy in Bangladesh, the national statistical organization Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS)Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), for the first time, conducted nationwide literacy assessment survey, and found the results very interesting. The literacy assessment survey conducted by BBS, with technical and financial support from UNESCO, found adult literacy rate to be 48.8 percent. Interestingly it also shows that about 50% of the adult literates are female, leading to gender parity.  The test based literacy assessment shows that there is much improvement in the overall literacy situation, compared to the results of similar assessments made by other organizations – namely Education Watch (2002) and UNESCO Dhaka Office (2005). However, a sharp decline of literacy among the urban males is observed. The survey also classified the respondents into four groups, based on their level of literacy skills: Non-Literate, Semi-Literate, Literate at Basic Level, and Literate at advanced level.

EFA Global Monitoring Report 2009

Despite much progress since 2000, millions of children, youth and adults still lack access to good quality education and the benefits it brings. This inequality of opportunity is undermining progress towards achieving Education for All by 2015.

Who are these individuals and groups? What are the obstacles they face? How can governance policies help break the cycle of disadvantage and poverty? What policies work? Is education reform integrated into the bigger picture? Is the international community making good on its commitments?

Guidelines for the Mass Media in Election Coverage

Most countries have got their own set of standards in relation to media coverage of elections, but Bangladesh has none. That's what motivated UNESCO Dhaka in developing the proposed "Guidelines for the Mass Media in Election Coverage" just ahead of the 9th parliamentary elections in Bangladesh. UNESCO expresses its gratitude to the media, journalists associations, political parties, civil society organisations and Election Commission for their support and assistance in the initiative.
We believe there should be a set of common standards that journalists may refer to or consult with while reporting on elections. It is certainly useful to have a common checklist or uniform standards for the media to turn to ensure unbiased and equitable coverage of the overall election process. We expect the proposed guidelines would at least create the awareness about the need for having a set of guidelines for reporting elections.

We will be happy to receive your comments and recommendations on the proposed guidelines. We believe your contribution will help us develop a Guideline that is more agreeable to the media and others concerned.
