Most countries have got their own set of standards in relation to media coverage of elections, but Bangladesh has none. That's what motivated UNESCO Dhaka in developing the proposed "Guidelines for the Mass Media in Election Coverage" just ahead of the 9th parliamentary elections in Bangladesh. UNESCO expresses its gratitude to the media, journalists associations, political parties, civil society organisations and Election Commission for their support and assistance in the initiative. We believe there should be a set of common standards that journalists may refer to or consult with while reporting on elections. It is certainly useful to have a common checklist or uniform standards for the media to turn to ensure unbiased and equitable coverage of the overall election process. We expect the proposed guidelines would at least create the awareness about the need for having a set of guidelines for reporting elections. We will be happy to receive your comments and recommendations on the proposed guidelines. We believe your contribution will help us develop a Guideline that is more agreeable to the media and others concerned. Guidelines for the Mass Media (1.92 MB)
