Training Workshop on Conservation of Terracotta Plaques of Paharpur and publication of training manu |

A three weeks long training workshop on the conservation of Terracotta Plaques of Paharpur Vihara taken place. It was a training programm on capacity building for the national staffs and the main themes of the training were: - Techniques of conservation and repair of removed TC plaques ;
- develop the appropriate storage facilities for removed plaque;
- technique and methods of removal of terracotta plaques and ornamented bricks from main structure;
- acquire technique of replacing of terracotta plaques as well as ornamented Bricks;
- handling of TC plaques as well ornamented bricks;
- restoration methods of TC plaques;
- cleaning of TC plaques;
- learn appropriate chemical treatments of TC plaques;
- scientific and proper storage methods of fragile TC plaques;
- the monitoring system of TC plaques (both in situ and removed ) ;
- develop scientific documentation of TC plaques and ornamented bricks;
- cataloging of the TC Plaques;
- Techniques of photo-documentation of TC develop digital documentation of TC.
Main objectives of this training was capacity building of staff of Department of Archaeology, Bangladesh, National Museum, Student and teachers from various universities and institutes who are working in this area. The training manual will be published soon for dissemination. |

Training on Protection of Archaeological Sites and Role of Media |

With a broad objective for skill development and motivation for the local journalist on the issues of rights of heritage and restoration of archaeological sites UNESCO Dhaka in collaboration with the Mass-line Media Centre and Dhaka Reporters Unity has organized a two day long training workshop from 15-16 June 2004. The objective was to building capacity of the media journalist on “public awareness through media to preserve heritage”. Main Issues discussed were - - Concept and technique of issue selection for heritage reporting;
- Preparing reports/features by considering the sensitivity of the issues;
- In-depth reporting on heritage – identifying issues and focusing on structure, environment and community;
- Identifying the role of community people in preserving and promoting heritage and reporting on media;
- Identifying the role of media in preserving and promoting heritage and reporting in the media;
- Laws related to heritage site preserving and protection of the sites;
- Techniques of follow-up reporting to promote and preserve the heritage;
- Fact-findings and monitoring the case of destruction of archaeological sites;
- Recommendation for future actions.

National Seminar on Bagerhat – the city of Mosque World Heritage Site |

The main objectives of the seminar were examining the present status and determine the future strategy for the site. National scholars and institutes working in the field of heritage management and research presented number of papers on present status of the site after 12 years of restoration and conservation works there under UNESCO Paharpur-Bagerhat Safeguarding Projects. They main emphasis was given to maintenance, restoration, conservation, preservation, Site management etc. local community involvement, economic activities concerning the site, public and national awareness and to determine the need to enhance the present condition in spite of various constraints. This seminar concluded with a set of recommendations. |

International Seminar on Paharpur World Heritage Site |

The International seminar on “Elaboration of an Archaeological Research Strategy for Paharpur World Heritage Site and its Environment ( Bangladesh )” took place on 20-25 March 2004. Seminar was jointly organized by Department of Archaeology, Ministry of Cultural Affairs, and UNESCO Dhaka. Examine the present status of the Paharpur Vihara and determine the future policy for the World Heritage site; assessed the situation of action undertaken at Paharpur Monuments since its discovery up to recent restoration; In the light of recent discoveries (Buddhist sites in Jagdal Vihara, Halud Vihara, Jagjivanpur and literary, epigraphic and artistic evidence) re-examine the site in its whole context from a historic perspectives; Define, for the site of Paharpur and its surroundings, a coherent strategy in terms of research, archaeology, safeguarding, conservation and heritage management, taking into account the strong environmental constraints (heavy rain…), and assembling the different professions like archaeologists, historians, engineers, conservation specialists etc. |
