Rally in Dhaka at Global Action Week 2008The Global Action Week (GAW) 2008 kicked off to a good start across Bangladesh. A wide range of activities are being organized in many parts of the country to mark the 2008 GAW, with active and enthusiastic participation by government officials, development partners, NGOs, community organizations, teachers, teacher associations, students, parents, media professionals, and ordinary citizens.

Regional Planning Meeting on literacy initiative for empowerment, Islamabad,. Pakistan, 20-22 March PDF Print E-mail
The Literacy Initiative for Empowerment (LIFE) is a programme of action
in support of the achievement of Education for All and a key operational
mechanism to increase literacy learning opportunities within the framework
of the United Nations Literacy Decade (UNLD).

The LIFE initiative will be implemented in 35 countries with literacy rates
of less than fifty percent or a population of more than 10 million persons
without literacy competencies. Currently, 85% of the world population
without literacy competencies and skills lives in these 35 countries. The
majority of them are girls and women.

In Asia and the Pacific, the nine (9) countries participating in the LIFE initiative
are: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Iran, Nepal, Pakistan
and Papua New Guinea. These countries undertook preparatory work during
2005 to produce their respective Country Profiles, which cover literacy status,
policies, strategies and practices.

The Asia-Pacific Regional Planning Meeting on LIFE was organized by
UNESCO’s Asia-Pacific Regional Bureau for Education in close co-operation
with UNESCO’s Islamabad Office and UNESCO Headquarters. The Meeting
was held at the Holiday Inn Hotel, Islamabad, Pakistan, from March 20-22,
2006. The purpose of the meeting was to assist LIFE countries with the
organization of preparatory activities for implementing the LIFE initiative.

Conducting a national capacity building workshop on education data and indicators PDF Print E-mail

Following the recommendation of the diagnostic study, this activity was piloted in Dhaka with 35 government officials from national, division and district levels. The objective of this activity was to build capacity of government officials on education statistics and data. All participants were oriented on how to calculate basic education indicators and analyze them though discussion and with using computers. This activity will be continuously carried out at divisional levels from 2006 to 2007. A trainer team will be formed with several resource persons from BANBEIS and DPE.

 
 
 
Conducting a diagnostic study on education statistics in Bangladesh PDF Print E-mail

The national technical committee (NTC) of education statistics was formed in 2004 under the project “ Statistical Capacity Building “funded by EC. The research team consisted of 4 members from UNESCO Institute of Statistics, BANBEIS, Directorate of Primary Education, and UNESCO Dhaka. The team visited various education institutions at national, divisional, district, sub-district and village levels and looked into data collection, management and dissemination. The report was finalized in April in 2005. The report describes current routine data collection systems with its strengths and challenges and makes recommendations for further improvement. Based on the findings of the report, a national workshop was held in Dhaka , with government officials at the national level. UNESCO EMIS software, which facilitate data process and dissemination, was introduced.
