Skills Training to Adolescent GirlsThe objective of this project was to empower the marginalized and vulnerable adolescent girls and boys to become the agent of social transformation. Basic education along with science education, skill training, micro-finance facilities and communication services are provided at community learning centres (CLC).
The project addressed the needs of 1300 poor adolescent girls and boys at 35 CLCs in Tangail and Narshingdi districts of Bangladesh . Two NGOs, Dhaka Ahsania Mission and Nari Maitree, implemented three main components of the project – Education and Micro-finance, Science, and Communication & Information. Through Education and Micro-finance component, the targeted adolescent girls and boys were provided with literacy; skill training; micro-credit; basic and reproductive health education and services; family life, legal and gender education. In Communication & Information component, access to computers, learning software, internet was ensured at community resource centres (CRC). Learners came to know how to use computers and learned from educational software.
There are 4 CRCs in two districts, which work and connect other CLCs. At those CRCs, the science education and activity based training were provided to the adolescent girls and boys. The contents of the science education are mainly on solar panel, arsenic test, iodine test, compost fertilizer, improved oven, solar dryers and water filtering. CRCs also functions as a clearinghouse of information on education, NFE, skill training and literacy.

Following the success in two districts, more 25 CLCs were established in two other districts - Jessore and Jamalpur. In both districts, basic education and micro finance components were focused. This activity will be continued in 2006 and its achievements and lessons learnt will be reflected in the policy dialogues at national level.
