Literacy and skill training for rickshaw pullers for alternative employment

  • PDF
There are more than 800,000 rickshaw pullers in the country. Since many of them are illegal and they caused the heavy traffic jams in cities, GOB has restricted and reduced the number of rickshaws. A vast number of rickshaw pullers are being cornered to change their professions.
As a pilot project, literacy and skills training were provided to140 selected rickshaw puller. A survey of the rickshaw pullers was conducted in the Mirpur area of the Dhaka City covering their demographic background including socio economic and educational status. Based on the findings of the survey and demands in employment, literacy and skills training were designed. Those training are House wiring, Refrigeration and Air-conditioning, Dress Making, Embroidery, and Food Processing. More effort needs to be made to raise more awareness of GOB, NGOs and donors on this issue and raise funds as well in 2006
